Lithuania Reinforces Border Control Amid Unusual Threats from Belarus

Chas Pravdy - 29 October 2025 15:42

According to Reuters, the Lithuanian government announced the extension of border closure with Belarus at least until the end of November.

The decision is in response to serious airspace violations by unidentified balloons used for smuggling, predominantly cigarettes.

Prime Minister Inga Rukienė emphasized that these balloons represent a hybrid attack from Belarusian authorities aimed at destabilizing the region.

She stated that Lithuania will shoot down any such objects that compromise its security.

The government also announced exceptions for diplomats, EU and NATO citizens, as well as Ukrainians leaving Belarus or holding humanitarian visas for Lithuania.

The European Union’s Secretary-General expressed understanding of the sensitive situation and supported Lithuania’s decision, highlighting that national security is paramount, despite potential inconveniences for citizens.

Lithuanian President Gitanas Nausėda confirmed that the country would strengthen perimeter control and shoot down any balloons violating its airspace, acknowledging that detection capabilities have significantly improved thanks to new technological advancements over recent months.
