French Court Once Again Rejects Ukraine’s Extradition Request for Businessman Jevago: Details and Implications
The French judicial system has once again ruled against Ukraine’s attempt to extradite Ukrainian businessman and former parliamentarian Kostiantyn Jevago.
The Court of Cassation in Chambéry confirmed the appellate court’s decision, which refused to surrender Jevago to Ukraine, citing Ukraine’s inability to guarantee a proper judicial process and respect for human rights.
This marks the second time the French court has denied the extradition request of this businessman.
According to investigations, Ukrainian authorities suspect Jevago of providing illicit bribes to high-ranking officials, including the Head of the Supreme Court, Vsevolod Knyazyov.
Jevago denies any involvement and claims that the criminal case against him is politically motivated and aimed at exerting pressure.
His lawyers criticized the Ukrainian court’s decision to conduct investigative actions without his presence and noted that interrogations and legal procedures have already taken place in France.
This indicates an active interest by Ukrainian authorities and potential political pressure through international legal cooperation.
It is also noteworthy that in March 2023, a French court previously rejected Ukraine’s extradition request for Jevago under different charges related to the misappropriation of 113 million dollars from Fінансы & Кредит bank.
The assets of Jevago and related entities remain under arrest, including real estate and corporate rights, exemplifying the complexity and tension surrounding this case, which has political undertones and highlights increasing friction between Ukraine and France regarding legal procedures and justice.
