Ex-Ukrenergo CEO Detained: Political Conspiracy or Justice?

Chas Pravdy - 29 October 2025 19:08

On October 28th, in Lviv region, the Ukrainian State Bureau of Investigation detained the former head of the national energy company Ukrenergo, Volodymyr Kudrytskyi.

This event has sparked widespread debates and stirred emotions among political circles and the public alike.

After conducting searches last week, authorities accused Kudrytskyi of complicity in a fraudulent scheme involving the misappropriation of nearly 14 million hryvnias transferred to the company.

According to investigators, in 2018, Kudrytskyi signed a contract with a private firm worth over 68 million hryvnias, but a substantial portion of the funds was illegally embezzled without any intention of fulfilling contractual obligations, and subsequently laundered.

There are also concerns about the motives behind these law enforcement actions, with some suggesting a possible political motive or exploitation of the investigation to serve personal or group interests within the current power structures.

Commenting on the situation, diplomat Lana Zerkal expressed the opinion that these actions could be an attempt to divert attention from other major corruption scandals and internal political conflicts.

She noted that staged investigations might serve as part of a broader campaign to discredit critics of the government, creating an illusion of anti-corruption efforts while actually hiding deeper issues.

Zerkal emphasized that the efforts of law enforcement are not solely about individual cases but appear aimed at constructing a narrative of unblemished integrity, which is far from reality, as supported by activities of experts and bloggers working for payment.

She also questioned the independence and objectivity of the investigation, highlighting that this case might be part of a larger political play aimed at destabilizing the Ukrainian judicial system and international reputation.

Meanwhile, the criminal case against Kudrytskyi emerged amid international attempts to clarify corruption issues within Ukraine’s highest echelons, including the extradition proceedings of a former SBU general suspected of treason, which is being considered by an Austrian court.

Zerkal concluded that such actions aim to portray Ukraine’s criminal justice system as ineffective or biased, ultimately serving a political agenda to destabilize the country and undermine its efforts to fight corruption effectively.
