The Possibility of Manufacturing Gripen Fighters in Ukraine: A Strategic Step Toward Strengthening Defense Capabilities
Discussions around establishing local production of the Swedish JAS 39E/F Gripen fighters in Ukraine are gaining momentum amidst the increasing need for modern military systems.
Experts and defense officials suggest that setting up manufacturing facilities within Ukraine could become a significant milestone in strengthening the country’s military infrastructure and technological potential.
If the Swedish company Saab, the manufacturer of these aircraft, decides to localize assembly and component production in Ukrainian enterprises, it would enable the creation of new jobs, enhance technological development, and bolster national defense.
According to analyses, developing a full-fledged production complex in Ukraine involves not only final assembly of aircraft according to Saab’s blueprints but also the manufacturing of various modules and systems to meet international quality standards.
Such a model has already been successfully implemented in Brazil, where Embraer’s plant assembles aircraft and manufactures fuselage and wing parts, while radar and electronic warfare systems are supplied by other companies.
Ukraine has a unique opportunity to leverage its technical capabilities and involve leading aerospace manufacturers to create an integrated production line aligned with modern defense requirements.
Moreover, experts warn that this process may take several years – from establishing technological processes to operational aircraft.
Learning from Brazil’s experience, which received its first JAS 39E Gripen in 2019 and is working toward establishing its own production, Ukraine’s government must understand that such projects demand extensive time, potentially spanning multiple years.
Nonetheless, the strategic importance of developing domestic manufacturing capacities, coupled with ongoing modernization efforts, makes this an extremely relevant initiative for Ukraine’s military future.
The responsibility for executing these projects swiftly and efficiently rests with the state, which must foster a favorable investment climate and attract international partners.
Ultimately, establishing national production capabilities would allow Ukraine not only to modernize its air force but also to create new employment opportunities and strengthen its military industry over the long term—critical factors given the current geopolitical situation.
