Powerful 6.1 Magnitude Earthquake Strikes Western Turkey: Damage and Rescue Efforts Underway

Chas Pravdy - 27 October 2025 23:21

On Monday evening, a severe earthquake with a magnitude of 6.1 struck the western regions of Turkey, causing significant structural damage and widespread panic among residents.

According to the national emergency agency, the tremors were registered in the city of Sinği̇rgi, located in the Balıkesir province.

The epicenter was approximately 6 kilometers underground.

The tremors were felt not only in Sinği̇rgi but also in nearby major cities such as Istanbul, Bursa, Manisa, and Izmir.

Initial reports from local media indicate damaged buildings in Sinği̇rgi, although no casualties have been confirmed so far.

This marks the second earthquake in the region within a few months: in August 2023, a similar 6.1 magnitude quake resulted in one death and dozens of injuries.

Turkey, situated along several active tectonic faults, is known for its high seismic activity.

International data reveal that in 2023, a devastating 7.8 magnitude earthquake caused the deaths of over 50,000 people and destroyed or damaged hundreds of thousands of structures across the southern and southeastern provinces.

The event posed one of the most challenging natural disasters the country has faced in recent decades, prompting national and international rescue and relief efforts.
