British Military Proposes Joint Nuclear Arsenal Use with Germany Amid Rising Russian Threat

Chas Pravdy - 27 October 2025 01:25

The global security landscape is rapidly evolving, and recent statements by former senior British military officials have sparked significant discussion.

Former NATO Secretary General Lord Robertson, alongside former UK Defence Chief Lord Houghton, jointly urged the UK government to initiate talks on the possibility of sharing nuclear weapons with Germany.

This proposal comes amidst growing concerns over potential Russian aggression, especially following the UK’s recent move to enhance its nuclear capabilities for the first time in a generation.

In Berlin, discussions are underway about France potentially providing nuclear protection through its arsenal, while German Chancellor Friedrich Merz expressed interest in opening negotiations with Sir Kieron Starmer.

The main obstacles to such collaboration include the UK’s non-membership in the European Union and the fact that its nuclear submarines are solely submerged and not deployed on aircraft, complicating integration into a joint defense framework.

It is noteworthy that the UK and France are the only European nuclear powers, with NATO heavily reliant on the US nuclear umbrella.

However, Lord Robertson warned of growing concerns that the US might withdraw from European defense commitments in the future, emphasizing the need for Europe to make strategic decisions.

Similarly, Marshal Lord Houghton shared this perspective.

Meanwhile, Estonia’s Defence Minister Hanno Pevkur announced that the country is ready to host British F-35A fighters capable of carrying nuclear bombs, though London considers such measures more provocative than effective for deterring Russia.
