Repressions in Russia: The regime devours its own, but can they change?

Chas Pravdy - 24 October 2025 15:29

In modern Russia, increasingly leaning towards authoritarian methods of governance and repression, even top officials are not immune from punitive measures.

Following a series of arrests and repressive actions against high-ranking officials, such as generals and military leaders, it becomes clear that the Kremlin relies less on loyalty or connections within the power elites to maintain control.

This signifies a shift in the structure of political security, where personal allegiance is less important than subordinate obedience and the regime’s strategic objectives.

The analysis indicates that even ties with influential clans no longer save high-ranking officials from house arrest or criminal prosecution.

Meanwhile, amid ongoing military conflict and discussions about the fate of military bases in Syria and other regions, the Kremlin endeavors to stabilize internal affairs to face internal and external challenges.

Those previously protected by immunity are now targeted, especially due to corruption and political pressure.

Therefore, the author predicts that repression will extend to other sectors, including dissenting war correspondents and patriots exposing abuses within the military, and even critics within the country.

This creates a new reality in which authoritarianism and repression become integral parts of Kremlin life, with the boundaries of loyalty rapidly shrinking.
