Chas Pravdy - 24 October 2025 22:40

The project to acquire modern Swedish JAS 39 Gripen fighters for Ukraine’s Armed Forces remains in the active negotiation and diplomatic discussion stage.

While Ukraine signed a memorandum of intent with Sweden to purchase over a hundred of these advanced aircraft, the issue of funding still remains unresolved and requires further negotiations.

Sources within the Ukrainian-Swedish delegation have refuted false reports suggesting that funding has already been secured — currently, consultations are ongoing regarding the details and possible sources of financing for this substantial purchase.Military analysts indicate that the financing issue has not been settled, emphasizing that only various scenarios are under discussion, including the potential involvement of frozen Russian assets.

However, no final decision has been made yet, and the financing plan is still under development.

Political leaders stress that this procurement is crucial for strengthening Ukraine’s defensive capabilities, and its realization depends on the financial capacity and continued support from international partners.Local authorities and military experts believe that acquiring Gripen fighters could significantly shift the battlefield balance, as these aircraft are considered among the most effective and technologically advanced globally.

President Volodymyr Zelensky declared that the next year should mark the beginning of active use of Swedish fighters in Ukrainian combat operations, stating that this purchase is a priority for the army reform.

However, Swedish Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson warns that delivery and operational deployment of the latest fighters could take at least three years, complicating immediate implementation plans.

Nonetheless, experts emphasize that this international agreement could greatly enhance Ukraine’s defense potential and represents a vital step toward victory in the ongoing war.
