Crime Against Ukrainian Refugee in the US Draws Public and Political Attention
A tragic incident in Charlotte, North Carolina, has brought increased scrutiny to the safety of Ukrainian immigrants in the United States.
34-year-old DeCarlos Brown Jr.
was formally charged with the murder of 23-year-old Ukrainian refugee Iryna Zarutska, who was fatally stabbed on a train carriage.
The deadly attack occurred on the evening of August 22, when Iryna boarded a train in downtown Charlotte, and the attacker, who sat behind her, pulled out a knife and stabbed her three times from behind.
The victim died at the scene.
It is known that Iryna had recently moved to the US from Ukraine, was living with her partner, and actively was learning English through courses and work at senior centers and local establishments.
Her family expressed satisfaction with the indictment and hope for swift justice, especially since North Carolina enforces the death penalty.
The death of the Ukrainian woman has sparked a political reaction nationwide: top officials, including Attorney General Pam Bondi, pointed out the issues related to lenient criminal policies and their consequences.
Former President Donald Trump also voiced his position, criticizing Democratic policies and linking impunity for offenders to this case.
