Ukraine Might Fund Gripen Jets Using Russian Assets: Swedish Perspective
The Swedish Ministry of Defense is exploring new financing mechanisms to support Ukraine’s acquisition of military aircraft.
Swedish Defense Minister Peter Jonsson announced that consideration is being given to utilizing frozen Russian assets to finance the delivery of JAS 39 Gripen E multi-role fighters.
This approach aims to help Kyiv obtain modern aircraft without putting additional strain on the national budget.
Ukraine plans to purchase around 100 to 150 Gripen jets, with the total contract estimated between 8 and 12 billion dollars, or roughly 80-120 billion Swedish kronor.
The first deliveries are expected in 2026.
The Gripen aircraft are praised for their high agility, versatility in combat roles, and compatibility with NATO-standard weapons, making them a strategic asset for Ukraine’s defense.
Yurii Ignat, Head of the Ukrainian Air Force’s Communication Department, highlighted that their cost-effective operation is vital amid ongoing military challenges.
The possibility of funding through frozen Russian assets presents a significant opportunity to strengthen Ukraine’s military capabilities while alleviating pressure on its economy.
