Two Russian Aircraft Briefly Breach Lithuanian Airspace: A Short Disruption in Europe’s Sky

Chas Pravdy - 23 October 2025 20:51

Last Thursday, an incident occurred in Lithuania’s airspace that drew the attention of military officials and the international community.

Two Russian military aircraft, likely originating from the Kaliningrad region, temporarily violated the country’s borders, prompting a swift response from Lithuanian defense forces.

According to official reports, the incident happened around 6:00 p.m., when Lithuania’s air defense system detected the border breach near the town of Kėbartai.

The statement indicates that the Russian aircraft included a Su-30 probably engaged in refueling training and an Il-78 tanker aircraft conducting such operations.

They flew approximately 700 meters into Lithuanian territory and exited the airspace after about 18 seconds.

Military reactions were immediate: two Spanish Eurofighter Typhoon fighters responded as part of NATO air policing missions.

The aircraft quickly retreated after the brief incursion.

This was not the first provocation by Russia concerning NATO airspace, as similar incidents have previously occurred in Estonia.

NATO Supreme Allied Commander General Aleksus Grinkevich stated that the firm response from alliance members has made Russia more cautious in its aerial operations, avoiding large-scale provocations.

This episode highlights the ongoing tension in the region and the heightened alertness of Baltic neighbors, who constantly monitor their borders amid escalating geopolitical conflicts.
