Court extends remand for suspect involved in corruption schemes, reducing bail amount
In Kyiv, Solomianskyi District Court upheld the continuation of detention for Roman Hrynkiv, who is suspected of corruption and economic crimes related to the supply of substandard military gear to the Ukrainian Armed Forces.
The preventive measure was extended until December 19, with the possibility to post bail of 69.644 million hryvnias.
This is a significant reduction from August, when the bail amount was 112 million hryvnias.
During the court session, prosecutors emphasized that the risk of flight remains due to the suspect owning real estate in Prague, and noted that Hrynkiv had been wanted since January 17, 2024, and was detained on January 22.
The defense argued that these risks are exaggerated and urged the court to apply a milder preventive measure, citing the family’s inability to pay the high bail.
The next hearing is scheduled for December.
Background: at the end of 2023, the State Bureau of Investigation detained prominent Lviv businessman Igor Hrynkiv, one of the largest suppliers to the Ministry of Defense, on suspicion of bribery and abuse.
He allegedly offered a $500,000 bribe to a senior official to facilitate the return of seized assets.
In January 2024, bail was set at over 429 million hryvnias.
The Hrynkiv family claims their activities complied with the law and considers the case politically motivated.
Investigations revealed extensive assets, including residential property, vehicles, and firearms.
Earlier in January 2024, the businessman was issued a nationwide search, eventually being detained in Odesa.
Additional investigations concern schemes involving the supply of poor-quality military equipment, which resulted in losses exceeding one billion hryvnias.
