Putin Promised Capture of Pokrovsk and Kupiansk: Kremlin Fearful of Rapid Peace Negotiations

Chas Pravdy - 22 October 2025 14:28

According to recent reports from Russian media, citing sources close to Russian President Vladimir Putin’s administration, the Kremlin remains unmotivated for a swift end to the war.

Russian military generals have already assured the Russian leader of plans to seize strategically important towns — Pokrovsk and Kupiansk — as part of broader occupation strategies.

However, official negotiations between Russia and Ukraine regarding a peace agreement have not yet concluded and are expected to be complex and prolonged.

Sources close to Putin’s administration claim that Moscow is not interested in a ‘barter’ deal with Ukraine — a ceasefire only for the sake of a formal declaration.

Russian military tactics focus on maximum territorial gains, and now it is crucial to consolidate control over captured positions to prevent returning to initial frontline lines.

At the same time, officials deny any immediate peace prospects, stating that a ceasefire would require more time and effort.

A well-known Russian analyst, cooperating with the Kremlin, says that preparations for peace are still very far off, and the main goal now is to hold the current positions.

CNN reports that negotiations with the US and Ukraine have been delayed, particularly due to Moscow’s refusal to cease fire in the short term.

While Trump announced a possible meeting with Putin in Hungary, media sources mention that preparations for this summit have been halted due to unresolved peace issues in Ukraine.
