Ukraine Must Retain Its Territories: Kalas Strongly Opposes Concessions in Peace Talks with Russia

A prominent EU official, High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy, Kaja Kalaas, made a strong statement regarding potential territorial concessions by Ukraine amid the ongoing conflict with Russia.

She emphasized that no peace agreement should involve ceding Ukrainian lands, as this would set a dangerous precedent and undermine international law.

She also pointed out that handing over any territories would send a signal to aggressors that using force against neighbors is acceptable and rewarding, potentially leading to broader destabilization across Europe.Following her statement, new discussions about possible compromises emerged.

Former chief negotiator for U.S.

President Donald Trump, Steve Vickoff, proposed that parts of Donbas be handed over as part of a ceasefire agreement.

In a Sunday interview with Fox News, he expressed the view that Russia would be able to retain some of the territories it seized during the war, illustrating the complex diplomatic landscape surrounding the conflict. Moreover, during a meeting with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky last week, Vickoff urged recognizing the possibility of concessions concerning Donbas, arguing that transferring this territory to Russia in exchange for peace was the optimal solution.

Earlier, Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk stated that no one should pressure Ukraine’s president into territorial concessions, emphasizing that the solution to the war must respect Ukraine’s sovereignty and territorial integrity.Overall, the situation remains uncertain, with conflicting positions from Kyiv and Western allies.

The future status of Ukraine’s territories within diplomatic negotiations continues to be a highly sensitive and unresolved issue.
