Chernihiv Left Without Power: Russian Strikes Destroy Energy Infrastructure

Chas Pravdy - 21 October 2025 08:25

On the night of October 21, Russian forces launched a massive attack on the energy infrastructure of Chernihiv region, resulting in a complete blackout in the regional capital.

The blackout caused significant issues with water supply, as the city’s water systems switched to emergency generators.

According to Vyacheslav Chaus, head of the Chernihiv regional military administration, at least 51 air targets, including two ballistic missiles and several attack drones, were recorded over the region.

Two ‘kamikaze’ drones struck heat supply and energy facilities in two communities within Chernihiv district.

As a consequence, the city of Chernihiv and surrounding communities were left without electricity.

Energy workers are actively engaged in restoring power, and critical infrastructure has been temporarily switched to generators.

Emergency ‘points of resilience’ have been established across the city, with plans to increase their number if restoration delays persist.

Water delivery to certain districts has been organized, and water columns have been set up for manual collection.

Local authorities urge residents to stockpile water in advance due to ongoing disruptions, and efforts are underway to keep the sewer systems operational, which involves running over 20 pumping stations monitored continuously.Meanwhile, Russia continues utilizing highly precise drones for targeted attacks, raising serious concerns in Ukraine regarding critical infrastructure, especially around Chernihiv.

Recently, there have been additional strikes on oil refineries, railway hubs, and power facilities in the region, further complicating logistics and energy supply chains.
