Oleksandr Tarnavskyi Returns to Leadership Position in Ukraine’s Military Structures
In late spring and early summer, Ukrainian military leadership experienced significant changes in their roles due to reforms and personal circumstances.
Specifically, Brigadier General Oleksandr Tarnavskyi, who previously held the positions of Commander of the Operational-Tactical Group ‘Donetsk’ and Commander of the 9th Army Corps, is returning to his former post.
His interim resignation was attributed to health issues, as confirmed by several military sources.
In his place, Major General Viktor Nikoluk, previously the chief of staff of the 9th Corps, was appointed.
Over time, Nikoluk gained trust from the command and was publicly seen during deployments to the hottest sectors of the front and frontline operations.
Recently, a decision was made to reinstate Tarnavskyi to his previous position, while Nikoluk was appointed commander of another unit, the 20th Corps, operating near the border of Donetsk and Dnipropetrovsk regions.
This movement took place amid military reform processes and strengthened Tarnavskyi’s influence within Ukraine’s military hierarchy.
Tarnavskyi is best known for leading the ‘Tavria’ Operational Strike Group during the challenging and ultimately unsuccessful offensives around Melitopol in 2023.
His approach during these battles faced criticism due to planning flaws and delays in mobilizing reserves and providing fire support.
In December 2024, he again took command of the 9th Corps and the associated ‘Donetsk’ operational group.
According to Ukrainian reports, since his appointment, at least eight brigade commanders have been replaced, with some asserting that Tarnavskyi himself initiated their dismissals.
By March 2025, he was actively influencing personnel decisions within his sector.
His career and ongoing promotions continue to attract attention from military analysts and experts, highlighting his significance in Ukraine’s ongoing conflict.
