Italy Ready to Fund US Weapon Purchases for Ukraine During Warfare

Chas Pravdy - 20 October 2025 23:51

Italy has officially expressed its willingness to provide financial support to Ukraine for the procurement of modern military equipment made in the United States.

This move marks a significant step within a specialized aid program crucial for strengthening Kyiv’s defense capabilities amid Russia’s large-scale invasion.

According to Bloomberg, Italian Defense Minister Guido Crosetto made this proposal during last week’s NATO defense ministers’ meeting.

Confidential sources revealed that many NATO member countries have already agreed to fund weapons purchases for Ukraine.

NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte noted that over half of the alliance’s 32 members support this initiative, with some countries already organizing new aid packages.

Since the beginning of the year, Ukraine has attracted nearly $2 billion in funding from six nations — a sum insufficient to meet the growing needs amid intensified Russian attacks on energy and civilian infrastructure.

The new delivery mechanism, known as PURL, allows Ukraine to independently purchase weapons, including vital Patriot missile defense systems, mainly supported by European partners.

Initially, Italy opposed direct participation in this program, arguing that Ukraine has other avenues to acquire necessary weaponry.

However, the country later changed its stance out of concern that it might be left out if certain allies gain dominance within the aid schemes.

This decision reflects a broader effort to ensure equitable support for Ukraine’s ongoing fight, which has lasted over four years.

The search for additional funding sources for Ukraine has become especially urgent as Western countries and the U.S.

face pressure due to a reduction in military aid.

The U.S.

has announced halting further funding for weapons supplies, prompting European allies to seek alternative solutions.

Italy has already prepared at least ten military aid packages for Ukraine, including air defense systems like the SAMP/T battery.

Details of these aid packages remain classified.

Despite budget constraints, Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni continues to support Ukraine consistently in its struggle for independence and territorial integrity.
