Russian Troops Advance in Pokrovsk: New Challenges for Ukrainian Defense
Urgent reports from the Donetsk region reveal increased activity of Russian military forces around the city of Pokrovsk, raising serious concerns for Ukrainian command.
According to the Institute for the Study of War (ISW), Russian forces are attempting to gain footholds in the eastern and northern parts of the city.
Geolocation videos released on October 18 show intense fighting south of Pokrovsk and in nearby settlements.
Meanwhile, Ukrainian troops are conducting counterattacks near the villages of Leontovichi, located just a few kilometers south of the city, aiming to prevent Russian advances.
The ISW analysts note that, despite the Russian military having a numerical advantage in personnel around Pokrovsk, full control over the area has not yet been established, as Ukrainian forces continue their counteroffensive efforts.
Russian media reports suggest significant progress toward Мирноград and within the city center, but these claims lack confirmation from official sources.
The escalation in this area increases risks and complicates efforts to stabilize the frontline, experts warn.
