Iran announces termination of 10-year nuclear deal: implications for global security

Chas Pravdy - 19 October 2025 07:17

In a surprising and significant move, Iran officially declared the termination of the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA), signed in 2015.

This decision signifies Tehran’s rupture with a decade of diplomatic efforts aimed at curbing its nuclear program and lifting international sanctions imposed in response to its nuclear activities.

According to statements from Iran’s Foreign Ministry, all provisions of the agreement, including restrictions on nuclear activities and oversight mechanisms, are now considered nullified.

However, Iran maintains a firm stance on its commitment to diplomacy.

This development has serious consequences for global security, especially as Iran has been intensively reinforcing its nuclear facilities, notably near Natanz, which suggests plans to resume its nuclear pursuits.

The international community faces the challenge of responding to this escalation, and future actions will be critical in preventing further proliferation risks in the region.
