Germany Prepares New Military Conscription Measures to Deterrence Russia
In Germany, internal discussions are ongoing regarding strengthening the country’s defense policies amid ongoing threats from Russia and other potential military conflicts in Europe.
Germany’s Defense Minister, Boris Pistorious, made an unexpected statement that could serve as a signal to Russia about a possible return to large-scale military conscription within Germany.
According to the minister, the country will reinstate conscription of young men if necessary, reversing a suspension that has been in place since 2011.
This move aims to create reserves and enhance the army’s combat readiness.
Pistorious emphasized that such steps act as a deterrent to potential aggressors and would allow for a precise assessment of the population’s readiness to engage in military actions.
Furthermore, he pointed out that the abolition of regional military enlistment offices—part of reform measures—was a serious mistake.
Currently, efforts are underway to establish new, modern structures by 2027, enabling a nationwide conscription process aligned with contemporary standards.
Pistorious also expressed confidence that by early 2026, the government intends to implement the new conscription law, and that legislative consensus with parliamentary factions is achievable, given the strategic importance for national security.
In May 2023, the German parliament approved a bill proposing a lottery-based system to select conscripts if voluntary recruitment falls short.
Young individuals will be invited to fill out a questionnaire, determining their participation in military service lasting from six to twelve months.
The Defense Minister will provide all necessary data on the required number of conscripts, with a vote on the new rules scheduled for 2024.
Germany is investing heavily in modernizing its military reform efforts, aiming to be prepared for any geopolitical challenges in Europe and beyond, reflecting a broader strategic approach to national security amidst ongoing instability.
