Ukrainian Parliament initiates investigation into Kasyanov unit disbandment: political and military implications

Chas Pravdy - 17 October 2025 12:36

The Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine has officially confirmed its intention to conduct a comprehensive investigation into the recent disbandment of the border service unit ‘Dozor-Kyiv 8’, which was responsible for long-range drone strike operations.

This decision follows a public appeal from Yuriy Kasyanov, a former unit commander, who criticized the leadership’s actions regarding his potential removal.

Member of the Temporary Investigative Commission on Defense issues and MP Yulia Yatsyk announced that the request from Kasyanov has been received and is being reviewed.

The commission aims to clarify whether the decision to disband the unit was justified and necessary from a military standpoint.

Yatsyk emphasized that this case is significant due to public interest and potential impacts on military discipline and national security.

She assured that the ongoing investigation will be transparent and impartial, with all relevant materials—documents, explanations, official reports—being gathered before making any decision.

Kasyanov accused senior officials of political motives behind the disbandment, claiming it was a form of retaliation for his critical publications on the effectiveness of Ukrainian drone development and military policy during wartime.

Many experts believe the disbandment was influenced by internal political struggles rather than operational inefficiency, as officially stated.

The investigation holds critical importance in establishing the truth and maintaining public trust in Ukraine’s military institutions.

The final conclusions and decisions will be documented and presented for parliamentary approval.
