Ukraine gains opportunity to participate actively in European defense initiatives and NATO support programs

Ukraine has finally secured the status of a participant in a vital European defense program, opening new horizons for its domestic military industry and strengthening national security.

According to the European Union Council, with the approval of the preliminary agreement to establish the European Defense Industry Program (EDIP), Ukraine will have direct involvement in this large-scale defense initiative.

The program’s total budget, covering 2025–2027, amounts to approximately 1.5 billion euros, with more than 300 million allocated specifically for a dedicated Ukraine Support Instrument.

This will not only provide our country with additional financial resources but also pave the way for participation in key European defense projects focused on developing strategic systems and technologies.

Furthermore, this program envisages close cooperation with Ukrainian defense enterprises for their integration into the European Defense Technology Industrial Base, essential for boosting Ukraine’s defense industry capabilities and responding to modern security challenges.

Importantly, mechanisms for supply security assurance and the creation of a centralized catalog of defense products will enhance collaboration between the EU and partner countries, Ukraine included, while respecting security standards.

The program also sets strict procurement controls, including a cap that components originating outside the EU or associated countries not exceed 35% of the final product’s cost, balancing European priorities with partner cooperation.

These steps signify a crucial milestone in establishing Ukraine as a full participant in European defense policy, ultimately strengthening strategic ties with allies and international partners in the military sphere.
