Frontline Situation in Ukraine: Minimal Russian Advances and Active Defense by Ukrainian Armed Forces

Chas Pravdy - 17 October 2025 09:32

The combat situation in eastern Ukraine remains tense and challenging.

According to Ukraine’s Commander-in-Chief Oleksandr Syrskyi, Ukrainian defenders continue to hold the line across all fronts, inflicting effective fire strikes and destroying enemy personnel and equipment.

Although Russian forces manage some minor advances in certain sections of the front, their gains are limited and come at a high cost in casualties and matériel.

Data from the Ukrainian General Staff indicates that in September alone, nearly 29,000 Russian servicemen, numerous tanks, armored vehicles, artillery systems, and missile launchers were lost.

Meanwhile, Ukraine reports the capture of over two thousand Russian soldiers since the beginning of the year, reflecting ongoing efforts to thwart Moscow’s strategic ambitions.

Syrskyi emphasized that Ukrainian troops have halted the spring-summer offensive of the enemy and continue to dismantle its plans through active defense strategies, conducting counterattacks and regaining lost positions.

Notably, Ukrainian forces are making progress in Sumy region, Donetsk district, and Zaporizhzhia, where successes include regaining control over certain territories.

An important aspect of Ukraine’s strategy is the deep targeting of Russian logistical and military infrastructure via systems like Deep Strike, which are destroying military targets, supply chains, and energy facilities in Russia, significantly hampering the aggressor’s capacity to conduct active hostilities and impacting its military and economic stability.
