Mandatory Military Training for Students Amid Ukraine’s Mobilization Efforts

Chas Pravdy - 16 October 2025 11:29

In Ukraine, the ongoing general mobilization and the state of martial law are part of wider military-political challenges facing the country.

Under current legislation, male reservists receive subpoenas, and starting from September 2025, higher education institutions have implemented mandatory basic military training (BMT) for students.

This initiative aims to enhance Ukraine’s defense capabilities by integrating military preparation into academic programs.

Lawyer Marina Bekalo explained to TSN.ua that BMT involves 300 academic hours, divided into two components: a theoretical course of 90 hours conducted within the universities, and practical training comprising 210 hours in specialized Ukrainian Armed Forces training centers.

All male students who are medically fit are required to participate in the practical component, while healthy women may voluntarily join these exercises.

To do so, they must register with the Military Recruitment and Social Support Center.

Upon completing the training, students swear an military oath, obtain a certificate, and a military specialty, which exempts them from mandatory military service, typically required for males aged 18–25.

Additionally, completing BMT will be a prerequisite for employment in government service, local government bodies, and the prosecutor’s office.

The program is designed to suit students enrolled in day and modular learning formats.

Practical classes will be scheduled during vacations, allowing students to avoid conflicts with their main academic activities.

Prior to beginning practical training, all participants will undergo a medical examination in accordance with the standards set by the Military Medical Expertise regulations.

Students deemed medically unfit will be exempted from practical courses.
