Fact-checkers debunk false claims about mobilization of pensioners in Ukraine
Ukraine is currently experiencing a general mobilization and martial law, which involves conscripting eligible men by sending them notices.
Recently, however, false information has circulated on social media suggesting that pensioners over the age of 60 will also receive summons as part of mobilization efforts.
The rumor quickly spread in Facebook groups, causing concern among the elderly and their families.
But the VoxCheck fact-checking team promptly clarified this misinformation.
They stated that the Ukrainian Ministry of Defense is not mobilizing pensioners over 60.
The manipulated headlines distorted the actual news content, creating a false impression that older persons are being mobilized.
Official information confirms that pensioners can participate voluntarily in military service if they are deemed fit and if a commander approves their enlistment in writing.
Military officials emphasize that these fake claims are aimed at disinformation and manipulation of public opinion.
The misleading headlines were designed to attract clicks, falsely suggesting the mass mobilization of seniors.
In reality, the law permits pensioners to take part in voluntary service under a contract, but this does not equate to an automatic mobilization of all retirees.
Earlier, the Odessa regional military registration and enlistment office also denied rumors about mobilizing Moldovan passport holders and other false reports circulating online.
