Deep nights in Kharkiv during the war: human fates and memory

Chas Pravdy - 16 October 2025 18:44

In challenging and tense conditions, Kharkiv hospitals continue to operate, preserving the faces and stories of those fighting for life during wartime.

Nurses and medical staff, despite fatigue and terrifying circumstances, stand daily at the frontline of life, maintaining human dignity even in the darkest moments.

Beyond the wartime chaos, the sounds of the city’s morning streets have returned — the dripping rain, the hum of transport, and the voices blending into one large organism of Kharkiv’s autumn cityscape.

Simultaneously, the city remains engaged in an internal struggle for water, especially in Saltivka, where activists and utilities work together to repair damaged pipelines.

The streets, filled with echoes of protest and the melodies of local musicians playing violins, symbolize resilience and a desire to thrive even amidst war.

Private initiatives like mobile cafes and charity fairs fill the city with energy and hope.

Meanwhile, underground passages host markets, symbolizing efforts to survive and support families and children attending underground schools or engaged in sports.

The revival of public transport, including the return of the tram that once raced along Traktorobudivnyk Avenue, is a small but powerful symbol of the city’s fight for stability and normal life.

All this is challenged by the harsh reality — constant explosions, fear, and people’s efforts to uphold humanity and hope for the future.

People sleep or struggle, trying to stay strong in this unpredictable war.

All these fragments form part of Kharkiv’s larger story — a city daily demonstrating resilience and humanity despite hardships and losses.
