After Russia’s Attack on Poland, NATO Enhances Support for Ukraine and Deepens Its Understanding of Its Role in Security
Following the recent drone attack by Russian unmanned aerial vehicles on Polish territories in September, NATO is observing a significant deepening of awareness regarding Ukraine’s role in ensuring regional security.
Ukrainian Ambassador to NATO, Alyona Hetmanchuk, stated that this incident marked a turning point in solidifying stronger support and understanding of Ukraine’s importance for collective defense in Europe.
She emphasized that ahead of the Ukraine-NATO Council meeting, which will be attended by Defense Minister Denys Shmyhal, the Ukrainian experience in countering drone attacks will be a key topic.
The diplomat highlighted that the attack, seemingly an attempt by Russia to divert international attention from Ukraine, actually had the opposite effect, drawing even greater focus to Kyiv’s strategic significance.
‘If Putin aims to distract the world from Ukraine with these attacks, it appears he has miscalculated, as international attention has only intensified,’ she said.
The upcoming NATO discussions will also focus on lessons learned over more than three and a half years of full-scale war, as well as Ukraine’s future defense plans.
There is already a keen interest among allies in understanding Ukraine’s air defense capabilities, particularly its experience in neutralizing drones of various scales and in maintaining security in the region.
This change in attitude signifies a growing acknowledgment within NATO of Ukraine’s vital contribution to regional stability and security, further reinforcing the strategic importance of Kyiv’s resilience and expertise.
