Ukraine Prepares for Winter Energy Challenges: President Warns of Electricity and Gas Imports

Chas Pravdy - 13 October 2025 21:29

Amid growing tensions in the energy sector, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy made a significant announcement during a recent press conference with European Union High Representative Kadri Simson.

He stated that Ukraine is preparing for potential difficulties in providing electricity this winter due to extensive Russian attacks on energy infrastructure.

As a result, the country may need to import significant amounts of electricity and gas to ensure stability for both civilians and critical services.

Zelenskyy explained that depending on the situation, Ukrainians might face the necessity to import electricity via international assistance, a step that has been previously implemented during harsh winter periods.

Moreover, the president noted that, due to the destruction of gas infrastructure by Russian strikes, Ukraine is actively negotiating with various partners to facilitate gas imports.

He emphasized that Ukraine has estimates of required volumes and prices, but the main challenge remains securing funding for these purchases.

Key partners include Norway, EU countries, and regional suppliers from the Middle East, all of whom are ready to supply gas without immediate payments.

Zelenskyy expressed confidence that financing solutions will be found.

Additionally, Ukraine is intensifying military efforts, including strengthening aviation capabilities to combat drones, in response to recent escalations.

On October 10, Russian forces launched a massive attack with 32 missiles and over 460 drones, resulting in widespread electricity outages and damage across numerous regions, affecting residential areas, critical infrastructure, and military facilities across Ukraine.
