Ukraine Grants Poland Permission for New Search and Exhumation Works Concerning Volyn Tragedy
Ukraine officially authorized Poland to conduct search and exhumation operations in the village of Ugli in Rivne region, marking a significant step toward uncovering and properly commemorating the victims of the Volyn Tragedy.
This decision was made in response to a request from the Polish side, specifically from Karolina Romanowska, seeking assistance in locating and exhuming remains buried in this area.
Ukraine’s ambassador to Poland, Vasyl Bodnar, announced that the Ukrainian authorities signed an official note authorizing Polish search teams to begin these activities.
He emphasized that this move aims to strengthen Ukrainian-Polish cooperation in historical research and long-term reconciliation efforts between the two nations.
Bodnar also urged Polish colleagues to remain open to honest dialogue on complex issues related to their shared history, highlighting that only through transparency and cooperation can true understanding be achieved.
It is also notable that Ukraine plans to issue additional permits for search and exhumation activities in other regions, including Huta Peniacka in Lviv and Ugli in Rivne.
Earlier in September, remains of villagers from Puzniki were reburied in Ternopil oblast with the participation of a Polish delegation, and excavations in the former Zbóyska village near Lviv have recently been completed.
These events exemplify the mutual desire of Ukraine and Poland to move forward with reconciliation, despite decades of disagreements over their painful shared past.
