Change of Detention Measure for Mercedes Driver in Bicycle Assault Case in Kyiv
In Kyiv, Ukraine, investigations continue into a high-profile incident involving the assault of a cyclist and the subsequent judicial decision to modify the preventive measure against the suspect, Mercedes-Benz driver Oleksandr Khilik.
Kyiv City Prosecutor’s Office successfully petitioned a court to change the suspect’s initial nighttime house arrest to a stricter pre-trial detention with the option to post bail set at five million hryvnias.
The court’s ruling, valid until November 25, 2025, aims to prevent flight or tampering with evidence.Currently, Khilik remains in detention, with charges filed against him for neglecting the victim, leading to severe bodily harm, under criminal proceedings.
The investigation period runs until October 31.
If he posts bail, he will still remain in custody until the specified date; otherwise, he will stay in detention until at least November 25.The incident took place in the Podil district of Kyiv, where the 44-year-old Mercedes driver and a 40-year-old cyclist clashed over illegally parked vehicles on a bike lane.
The driver, provoked by a remark, assaulted the cyclist multiple times, causing him to lose consciousness and fall onto the asphalt.
The attack was classified as intentional infliction of grievous bodily harm, marking a serious escalation of the conflict.
