Ukraine’s Security Needs: Strengthening Defense Capabilities to Counter Mega-Scale Aggression
President Volodymyr Zelensky emphasized the critical importance of bolstering Ukraine’s defense capabilities, specifically highlighting the urgent need for advanced air defense systems and long-range missiles, such as Tomahawk, to effectively resist adversaries from Russia, Iran, and North Korea.
In the midst of ongoing large-scale warfare, the Ukrainian leader pointed out that while the country is resilient, its safety depends heavily on acquiring modern weaponry and receiving robust international support.
Zelensky stated that current stockpiles of air defense systems and missile technology are insufficient to repel the extensive drone and missile attacks that Russia and its allies actively produce and supply.
He underlined that missile systems with extended range, notably Tomahawk missiles, would demonstrate to Putin and the world that Ukraine is supported and protected by Western allies.
The president also stressed the importance of economic sanctions as a tool for weakening the aggressor’s military potential, including restricting funding for Russia’s military-industrial complex and cutting off international cooperation channels that aid its defense industry.
He added that broad sanctions, especially targeting energy and banking sectors, could significantly impair Russia’s ability to sustain the war.
Zelensky urged closing all gaps allowing Russia to circumvent sanctions through cooperation with some Global South nations.
He believes that economic pressure remains the most effective method to counter Moscow’s military ambitions.
Moreover, Kyiv engages in ongoing diplomatic discussions with the United States regarding the transfer of Tomahawk missiles, recognizing the strategic value of such aid.
Over the past days, Zelensky held a productive conversation with U.S.
President Donald Trump on security, defense readiness, and energy issues.
He pointed out that Russia allocates at least $350 billion annually to support its war efforts, allowing it to rapidly produce drones, expensive missiles, artillery shells, and to establish partnerships with North Korea to enhance its military capabilities.
Zelensky concluded that economic sanctions are the most powerful leverage available to isolate and weaken Russia, calling for comprehensive and strict measures, particularly in energy and financial sectors, to halt the Kremlin’s military expansion.
