Political Crisis in Madagascar Continues: Protests Escalate as Central Challenge for Authorities

Chas Pravdy - 12 October 2025 16:17

Madagascar has been experiencing widespread protests for over two weeks, which have evolved into a complex political crisis.

Official representatives of the country declared that an attempt to unlawfully seize power is underway, with violence and rising tensions in the capital.

The demonstrations initially started over issues related to water and electricity shortages but quickly took on a political dimension, with protesters demanding the resignation of President Rajoelina, the dissolution of Parliament, and new elections.

At the center of the conflict is the military unit CAPSAT, which played a key role in the 2009 coup d’état.

Following the joining of some soldiers to the demonstrators, authorities declared a state of emergency and called for dialogue, yet the situation remains tense.

Local sources report injuries during the protests and a growing number of participants.

Security measures have been intensified across the country, despite criticism from the international community.

Military and law enforcement agencies expressed support for the leadership, while opposition groups demand open dialogue and a return to democratic standards.

The global community appeals for restraint and peaceful resolution of the crisis through negotiations to prevent further consequences for the country and the region.
