Comprehensive Guide to Military Specialty Assignment During Wartime in Ukraine

Chas Pravdy - 11 October 2025 04:32

Amid unprecedented challenges posed by military aggression and the urgent need for mobilization, understanding the process of assigning military specialties (MOS) becomes critically important for Ukrainians.

Currently, Ukraine is undergoing a nationwide mobilization under martial law, targeting men aged 25 to 60 who receive summons and are registered at military commissariats.

Legal experts from INSEININ have clarified that the military specialty defines a serviceman’s training, skills, and branch of service, which are recorded in military documents such as the military ID or temporary certificates.

This information is vital for mobilization, allocation to specific positions, and reservation.

According to regulations, MOS is assigned only to men within the specified age range who are registered as reservists or liable for military service.

Conscripts, on the other hand, do not initially have a MOS and acquire it only after being registered as reservists.

The Ministry of Defense of Ukraine has approved lists of over 200 specialties, each identified by a six-digit code— the first three digits represent the type of specialty, while the last two specify the position.

Recently, Ukrainian citizens gained the ability to check their MOS online via the «Reserve+» mobile app, streamlining the process of verifying military registration details in the context of ongoing mobilization.

Experts emphasize that these specialties are crucial for efficiently staffing the Armed Forces during wartime, as the assigned position largely depends on the individual’s MOS.

However, soldiers may be appointed to different roles after undergoing training and retraining.

The process of assigning MOS involves Territorial Recruitment Centers (TRC), which consider the individual’s education, professional experience, and skills.

Military students, cadets, and reservists receive their MOS either during their studies or upon graduation, depending on the regulations and documentation such as diplomas and certificates.

For those liable for military service or mobilized, the assignment is determined by local TRCs, based on education, work experience, and proficiency in related fields.

During active service, commanders assign MOS after trainings, courses, or skill enhancement sessions, based on acquired knowledge and experience (at least three months of service).

If a man does not have a MOS, his electronic military record will indicate the need for basic combat training and assign code 999, which signifies the necessity to apply to the TRC for an official MOS, especially in cases of mobilization.

Experts also highlight the convenience of checking MOS online via the «Reserve+» app, which provides up-to-date information on an individual’s military specialty.

Over 20,000 Ukrainians abroad have also registered with military centers, demonstrating the importance of flexible mobilization mechanisms in Ukraine’s ongoing defense efforts.
