Meta updates messaging tools to enhance user protection against online scams in WhatsApp and Messenger

Meta, the parent company of popular messaging platforms WhatsApp and Messenger, has taken significant steps to improve the security of its users.

The company announced the rollout of new features and tools designed to combat online fraud and safeguard personal data.

These updates provide users with enhanced capabilities to detect suspicious activities and raise awareness of potential cyber threats.

Specifically, WhatsApp now features a warning system during video calls if a user attempts to share their screen with an unknown contact.

Meta explains that malicious actors often manipulate victims into sharing screens to gain access to confidential information such as banking details or verification codes.

This new alert aims to give users more context to identify potential scams.

Additionally, Messenger is testing an upgraded chat scam detection system: if a new contact sends suspicious messages, users will receive a warning and can submit conversation snippets for AI-based analysis.

To further prevent fraud, Meta plans to provide more information about common scam techniques and offer recommendations, including blocking or reporting suspicious accounts.

Security enhancements also include the option to enable biometric authentication—using fingerprint, face recognition, or PIN—to make login processes more secure and convenient.

Moreover, Facebook and Instagram now feature a “Security Checkup” tool that enables users to review and update their security settings and passwords.

WhatsApp has a similar feature called “Privacy Check,” allowing users to manage privacy controls, like who can add them to groups.

Previously, Meta expanded the capabilities of its Threads app with the addition of private group chats for up to 50 participants, available currently only on mobile devices and outside the EU.
