Ukrainian tennis player Marta Kostyuk suffers defeat in Wuhan final, loses to 2023 Roland Garros finalist
Renowned Ukrainian tennis talent Marta Kostyuk experienced an emotional setback at the prestigious WTA 1000 tournament held in Wuhan, China.
This event, attracting global tennis attention, saw the 26th-ranked Ukrainian athlete face a tough challenge in the first round against Czech player Karolina Mukhova, who is also a finalist of the 2023 Roland Garros.
Despite winning the first set, Kostyuk ultimately lost the match in three sets with scores of 6:2, 2:6, 4:6.
This was their second encounter on court; previously, in September, Mukhova defeated Kostyuk in the US Open Round of 16.
The match highlights the competitive rivalry between the two — with Mukhova avenging her earlier defeat.
Notably, prior to Wuhan, Marta advanced to the quarterfinals at the WTA 1000 in Beijing, where she lost to top-ranked Jessica Pegula.
Despite this recent loss, Kostyuk remains a prominent figure in global women’s tennis, maintaining her position within the top 100 rankings and continuously proving her skill on big stages.
