Uzhhorod Opens New Chapter in European Railway Connectivity: Eurotrack Line to Chop Launched with Expansion Plans

In the city of Uzhhorod, a key cultural and transportation hub in the Zakarpattia region, an important event took place — the inauguration of a new railway line connecting it with neighboring Chop, a crucial transit point on the border of the European Union.
This event marks a significant milestone in Ukraine’s infrastructure development, symbolizing a major step toward integrating the country into European transportation networks.During the ceremonial event on Friday, September 5, at the Uzhhorod railway station, President Volodymyr Zelensky personally announced the opening of the new railway section.
According to him, starting from September 12, trains will operate along the 22-kilometer corridor, facilitating fast and comfortable travel between Uzhhorod and Chop.
This is the first phase of a large-scale project to establish a European gauge line in Ukraine, which will enhance the country’s integration into the EU’s rail network.Zelensky expressed confidence that this project is only the beginning of Ukraine’s railway modernization efforts.
He announced plans to extend the Eurotrack line to Lviv and other key destinations, ensuring Ukraine’s full participation in the European transportation ecosystem.
“We are on the path of infrastructural transformation, which continues even during wartime.
These projects connect our country and open new opportunities for development, business, tourism, and security,” the president emphasized.Currently, nearly 8 kilometers of the Eurotrack have been laid, representing approximately 40% of the total planned work.
Additionally, preparatory earthworks covering about 2 kilometers have been completed.
All technical and engineering standards comply with EU requirements, indicating a high level of readiness for train operations on the new corridor. The overall strategy involves phased expansion of the Eurotrack network, boosting logistics, attracting investments, and strengthening Ukraine’s international ties.
Future plans include new sections, modernization of existing railway infrastructure, and the creation of modern transport corridors aligned with European standards.
