Ahead of a crucial fixture against the national team of Ukraine, Azerbaijan saw a wave of sharp accusations and rebuke directed at their head coach, Fernando Santos.

The Secretary General of the country’s Football Federation, Jahangir Farajullayev, publicly voiced strong dissatisfaction with the coach’s performance and strategic choices.

According to Farajullayev, the current state of the national team leaves much to be desired, as the implemented tactics and system yield disappointing results and do not meet supporters’ expectations.

“We cannot remain silent about this situation, as our players are giving their best but lack proper leadership and strategy.

The coach’s attitude towards Azerbaijani football and its people is unacceptable.

We expect him to take responsibility; otherwise, we will be forced to take drastic measures,” Farajullayev stated.

Recall that under the guidance of the 70-year-old Portuguese coach, the Azerbaijani team has suffered nine defeats in eleven matches and has yet to secure a victory.

During World Cup 2026 qualifiers, Azerbaijan is grouped with Ukraine, with an upcoming match scheduled for September 9 in Baku.

Yesterday, on September 5, Azerbaijan was defeated 0-5 by Iceland in the opening qualifying game.

Meanwhile, Ukraine prepares for its next challenge in the qualifiers, analyzing its chances to advance to the finals of the 2026 World Cup.

Previously, it was reported that Ukraine lost to France in their opening match of the 2026 World Cup qualifiers.
