In the capital city of Ukraine, Kyiv, a significant sporting event took place as the nationwide wheelchair rugby tournament commenced.

This exceptional competition brought together veterans from across the country, eager to demonstrate their strength, endurance, and fighting spirit.

Held from August 30 to 31, the tournament was filled with intense moments, dynamic attacks, swift defensive transitions, sharp turns, and precise passes—all while overcoming dense defenses.

The atmosphere was electrified not only by the sounds of intersecting wheelchair wheels and screeches during quick maneuvers but also by enthusiastic spectators providing vocal support to the participants.

This event underscores the vital role of adaptive sports in empowering people with disabilities, offering physical and psychological benefits, and fostering community connection.

Additionally, the tournament incorporated mental health support initiatives for veterans, highlighting the importance of psychological resilience.

The sport itself originated in Canada in 1977 as an alternative to wheelchair basketball and has gained traction in Ukraine, attracting new participants each year.

Organized by the ‘Return Alive’ Initiative Center in collaboration with the Ministry of Veterans Affairs, the competition took place at the modern ‘Veneto-Sport’ complex.

Teams are formed just before games, adding an element of surprise and offering debutants a chance to gain valuable experience.

For seasoned players, it provides an excellent opportunity to reconnect with old rivals and test their endurance.

Earlier in May, Ukraine hosted its first-ever all-national wheelchair basketball competition, marking a growing enthusiasm for adaptive sports in the country.
