The national Ukrainian railway company, Ukrzaliznytsia, continues its efforts to restore and expand international rail connections, and has announced the launch of a new vital route linking Kyiv with Western countries.

This marks the first re-establishment of an international route since the start of the full-scale war in Ukraine, demonstrating the country’s gradual return to the European railway market.

The inaugural test train is scheduled for today, August 7, departing from Kyiv towards Bacău and Bucharest through Chișinău.

According to Moldova Liberă, this train will operate in a testing mode, with its departure from the Ukrainian capital planned for the night of August 7-8.

Arrival in Bucharest is expected during the night of August 8-9.

The return trip is planned for the following night.

It’s important to note that tickets will not be sold for this first test run, as it serves primarily to refine logistics and service operations.

Future plans include attaching two Ukrainian carriages to the Chișinău-Bucharest train, which will extend the route to the Romanian capital.

Ultimately, the route is expected to feature four carriages, making the journey more comfortable and accessible for travelers.

This initiative is a significant step toward re-establishing rail connectivity between Ukraine and Europe amidst ongoing conflict.

Additionally, Ukrzaliznytsia has updated its schedule and added several new international and domestic trains.

The company is also testing a new verification feature via the «Diia.Pidpys» app for some international routes, allowing passengers to confirm their identity more securely.

During this testing phase, the verification will be available on three out of five planned routes, simplifying and enhancing the safety of purchasing tickets for international rail travel.
