International Handball Federation Seeks Reinstatement of Russian and Belarusian Teams in Global Tournaments

Official representatives of the international handball community are actively exploring the possibility of allowing teams from Russia and Belarus to participate again in international competitions. According to the Belarus Handball Federation, the International Handball Federation (IHF) has requested the International Olympic Committee (IOC) to consider a scenario for reintegrating athletes from the invading countries into competitions. On June 5, IHF President Hassan Moustafa sent an official letter to the IOC proposing to permit Russian and Belarusian handball players to compete again under the federation’s umbrella. In his appeal, Moustafa emphasized that this move demonstrates support for the unity of the global handball community and promotes the sport’s popularity worldwide. He added that if the IOC grants approval, IHF would gladly reinstate Russian and Belarusian athletes in international tournaments. The federation hopes for a swift peace settlement and stabilization of the geopolitical situation, which would allow athletes from Russia and Belarus to return to the international arenas and showcase their skills. Nevertheless, IHF officials acknowledge that geopolitical complexities and diplomatic considerations must be taken into account, stressing that their actions are solely aimed at fostering the sport’s growth and supporting global peace initiatives. This initiative has sparked considerable debate among sports circles, as the reinstatement of teams from countries involved in military conflicts requires careful consideration and coordination with international authorities. The upcoming days will reveal whether the IOC supports this proposal and whether athletes from Russia and Belarus will be allowed to resume their participation in global competitions.
