Ukraine submits language law draft to Hungary, awaits response

Chas Pravdy - 06 November 2025 19:35

Ukraine has taken a significant step towards resolving language issues in the education sector by forwarding a draft law to Hungary.

Deputy Prime Minister for European and Euro-Atlantic Integration Taras Kachka announced that the document partially considers Budapest’s demands regarding language rights and educational standards.

Using a diplomatic approach, Ukraine incorporated five out of eleven requirements put forward by Hungary.

Although specific details about the draft are not disclosed, Kachka noted that if Hungary finds the proposal acceptable, it will be submitted to the Verkhovna Rada for approval.

The deputy prime minister also pointed out that in the majority of Ukrainian schools with Hungarian as the language of instruction—around two-thirds—education is conducted with Hungarian as the main language and several subjects taught in Ukrainian.

In the remaining schools, Ukrainian is the primary language, with a few key subjects taught in Hungarian.

Ukraine is now awaiting Hungary’s response within the next few days to finalize the agreement and ensure a balanced approach to language education for both nations.
