Trump refuses to renew trade talks with Canada amid advertising disputes

Chas Pravdy - 31 October 2025 19:32

U.S.

President Donald Trump has dismissed the possibility of resuming trade negotiations with Canada, citing ongoing tensions caused by a controvertial advertising campaign criticizing tariffs.

Responding to reporters on Air Force One, he explicitly stated that he has no plans to reopen economic dialogue with Canada, despite receiving apologies from Prime Minister Justin Trudeau for the ‘antitariff’ publicity.

Trump emphasized that his personal relations with the Canadian leader remain friendly, although he condemned the actions of the Canadian government.

Meanwhile, U.S.

Energy Secretary Chris Wray mentioned that the goal is to restart negotiations and strengthen cooperation in the oil, gas, and critical minerals sectors to address current difficulties.

It is noteworthy that on October 26, Trump imposed an additional 10% tariff on Canadian goods in response to television advertisements from Ontario criticizing tariff policies, which featured clips of former President Ronald Reagan.

Ontario Premier Dung Ford promised to cease broadcasting the ads, but this did not ease tensions with Washington.

Mark Carney, who has traveled to Washington multiple times for trade talks, stated that his government is ready to resume negotiations at any moment, although the diplomatic impasse remains due to ongoing disagreements.
