European Union Calls for US Dialogue on Trade Issues Amid Global Tensions
In Brussels, an important meeting took place between representatives of the European Union and high-ranking officials from the United States, signaling renewed diplomatic efforts in the realm of international trade.
European leaders, including representatives of the European Commission and the rotating EU presidency, invited US Trade Secretary Howard Lutnick to discuss pressing trade issues affecting the global economy. The meeting occurs against the backdrop of heightened tension between the US and China over controls on the export of rare-earth metals.
It also follows the US Senate’s recent decision to lift tariffs imposed on over 100 countries by the previous administration.
This development sets a new context for transatlantic relations. While Lutnick’s participation has yet to be officially confirmed, discussions are expected to focus on tariff concessions for sectors such as chemicals and alcoholic beverages, as well as on expanding the US steel tariff list, which currently covers 50% of steel imports.
These steps indicate efforts by both sides to find common ground amid ongoing international trade disputes. Both Brussels and Washington are working to implement agreements reached in July during the G7 summit in Scotland, aiming to stabilize global trade relations and prevent new conflicts in the sector.
