Donald Tusk Calls Brexit the Most Serious Mistake in European History and Expresses His Stance on Ukraine’s Integration

Former Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk, in an extensive interview with The Sunday Times, openly voiced his opinions on major political and historical events shaping modern Europe.

Central to his discussion was his critique of the Brexit referendum, which he described as the greatest mistake in continental history.

Tusk emphasized that the realization of this mistake becomes clearer each year, as it deprived Europe of one of its most committed allies — the United Kingdom. He recalled that a decade ago, when then-UK Prime Minister David Cameron decided to use the referendum as leverage to secure better terms within the EU, his disappointment with Brexit only grew.

Most notably, he pointed out that the UK’s departure deprived Poland and other countries of valuable support in their European integration efforts.“I firmly believe that Brexit is one of the worst mistakes in our shared history,” Tusk stated.

“Its impact is especially evident today, forcing us to reconsider core European values and principles.” He added that the UK long stood not only as part of the European community but also as a source of its foundational values.Tusk concluded with a poignant note, highlighting the important role the UK played in shaping European ideals.

He expressed his respect for former Prime Minister Cameron but criticized his reckless approach regarding the future of Europe, which he considers a fatal decision.

Currently, Tusk actively comments on Russia’s war against Ukraine, emphasizing that Ukrainians are fighting for Europe’s future on the frontlines.

He states confidently that Ukraine should join both the EU and NATO, despite concerns from some countries about potential economic impacts or security risks.

According to him, now, at this crucial moment, Ukraine and Poland must unite efforts to build an unbreakable European security system capable of resisting external threats, especially Russian aggression.
