Zelensky describes EU’s Russian asset decision as a significant step in supporting Ukraine
President Volodymyr Zelensky expressed a positive outlook regarding the recent decision by the European Council concerning the utilization of frozen Russian assets to support Ukraine.
According to him, this decision is a crucial step that opens new opportunities to strengthen Ukraine in the ongoing fight against aggression.
Zelensky emphasized that this process involves three key stages: the initial political decision, followed by practical implementation, and finally, the deployment and monitoring of the assets.
He noted that the political resolution was achieved recently, sending a positive signal to Ukraine and its allies.
The Ukrainian leader hopes that the practical measures will be taken by the end of this year, demonstrating effective use of the assets.
At the same time, Zelensky mentioned that the final decision on the use of frozen Russian assets may be made by the end of 2025, and this issue remains on the international agenda, especially within the EU and Ukraine’s partner nations.
More specifically, on October 23, the European Council approved conclusions concerning Ukraine, which mentioned the remaining frozen assets of Russia, but the question of their use remains contentious, notably due to Belgium’s position.
However, EU officials assured that this matter remains on the agenda and will be addressed soon to support Ukraine in countering Russian aggression.
