EU Approves 19th Sanctions Package Against Russia: New Measures and Diplomatic Negotiations
The European Union’s Member States’ representatives confirmed on Wednesday the approval of the 19th sanctions package against Russia, marking another significant step in the EU’s response to Moscow’s aggression.
According to sources, including ‘Europrava,’ this information was shared by Radio Free Europe/Radio Liberty correspondent Ricard Yozvyak via his X (Twitter) account.
Details of the approval process indicate that consensus was reached late Wednesday evening, paving the way for formal adoption during the EU Council meeting, which is expected to take place soon.
EU diplomat Kaja Kallas previously expressed optimism that the process could be completed by Thursday during the European Council session.
It is worth noting that delays in approving the sanctions were caused by some member states’ positions, notably Slovakia, which demanded that the European Commission consider its reservations concerning internal combustion engine vehicles and energy price regulations.
Austria also voiced objections, insisting on removing certain Russian assets from sanctions to mitigate penalties imposed by Russia on Austria’s Raiffeisen Bank International, but these proposals ultimately proved unsuccessful.
The new sanctions package signifies the EU’s reinforced stance and commitment to counter Russian aggression and support Ukraine’s sovereignty in the ongoing conflict.
