On Tuesday, October 21, Japan marked a historic milestone.
Sanae Takaichi, a 64-year-old politician previously less known internationally, secured victory in the parliamentary elections and officially assumed the role of Japan’s first female Prime Minister.
Her candidacy was supported by 237 votes in the lower house, surpassing the minimum required by four votes, and passed a second vote in the upper house to confirm her appointment.
This event is particularly significant for Japan, a country where female representation in politics has historically been low and remains one of the lowest among developed nations worldwide.
