The Time Has Come to Pass New Sanctions Legislation Against Russia, U.S. Senate Accelerates Efforts
The United States Senate has once again commenced discussions on the urgent need to pass a significant legislative bill aimed at imposing comprehensive economic sanctions against the Russian Federation.
This development has gained particular importance ahead of the upcoming meeting between Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky and U.S.
President Joe Biden at the White House, amid recent diplomatic and military movements.
Senate Majority Leader John Thune emphasized that the time to act is now and that all efforts should be directed toward increasing pressure on Russia to cease its aggression against Ukraine.
The bill, currently supported by over 80 senators from both parties, is expected to become a key legislative act in the context of sanction policies.
However, due to delays in the House of Representatives caused by the ongoing government shutdown, its approval has been postponed for now.
U.S.
authorities recently expressed their intention to grant the president more powers to flexibly apply sanctions, including the possibility of their temporary lifting for reasons of national security.
The legislation proposes strict measures such as a 500% tariff increase on imports of Russian energy resources and mechanisms for blocking and sanctioning companies collaborating with Russia.
House Speaker Mike Johnson has also expressed support for the initiative, stating that a clear message needs to be sent to the Kremlin, which refuses to engage in serious negotiations to end the war.
Preparations for voting are underway, and experts hope that the bill will soon be reviewed and adopted for further implementation as part of efforts to exert pressure on Moscow and its accomplices.
