Hungary prepares for Trump-Putin summit in Budapest

Chas Pravdy - 17 October 2025 13:36

Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán announced that preparations are underway for a potential summit between U.S.

President Donald Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin in Budapest, which could become a significant diplomatic event on the European stage.

He mentioned that an organizational committee has been established and work has already begun, although no official date has been set yet.

During a radio broadcast, Orbán emphasized that, among possible locations outside Europe, Budapest remains the only suitable site, as Hungary actively advocates for peace, as evidenced by its recent deployment of reconnaissance drones over Transcarpathia, signaling its commitment to stability and diplomatic resolution.

Prior to the summit, a meeting between Russia’s Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov and U.S.

Secretary of State Mark R.

Rubio is scheduled for next week.

If talks are successful, the two presidents could meet in Budapest within a week for direct negotiations.

Orbán highlighted that both sides have decided to task their foreign ministers with resolving outstanding issues during this week in preparation for the top-level dialogue.

This development is particularly notable given that, following a telephone conversation on October 16, U.S.

President Donald Trump announced plans for a second meeting with Vladimir Putin in Budapest, alongside discussions about facilitating a possible encounter between Putin and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, indicating a diplomatic push towards peace initiatives in the region.
