Moldova appoints new prime minister: a candidate with Ukrainian experience and international background
The parliamentary majority in Moldova has taken a significant step by nominating a candidate for the country’s head of government.
The Party of Action and Solidarity (PAS), which recently won the parliamentary elections, has proposed a renowned businessman and economist — Alexander Muntianu — as the new prime minister.
This candidate brings a wealth of international experience and has dedicated a substantial part of his career to Ukraine, positioning him as a capable leader with a broad perspective.
According to party leader Igor Grosu, Muntianu’s candidacy will be submitted to Moldovan President Maia Sandu after the approval of parliamentary mandates by the Central Electoral Commission and the convening of the parliament.
Born in 1964 in Chișinău, Muntianu holds a higher education degree in physics and initially worked at the Institute of Applied Physics of the Moldovan Academy of Sciences.
Later, he joined the Technical University of Moldova as an associate professor and served as deputy dean of the International Faculty.
After the establishment of the National Bank of Moldova, he headed the foreign exchange department and later became deputy director of the external relations department.
His international education was obtained at Columbia University in New York, where he specialized in international relations, banking, and finance.
After completing his studies, he worked at the World Bank in Washington.
Muntianu is also the founder and president of the French Alliance in Moldova and one of the founders of the American Chamber of Commerce in Moldova.
He returned to Moldova in 1997, working at the Center for Strategic Studies and Reforms (CISR) and as the director of the WNISEF American Investment Fund.
Since 2007, he has led the direct investment department at Dragon Capital in Ukraine, and in 2016, he founded his own investment company, 4i Capital Partners.
His career was recognized in 2006 when he was awarded the Legion of Honor by France.
According to the Moldovan publication Ziarul de Gardă, in 2018, he ran for internal elections of the American Chamber of Commerce in Ukraine, emphasizing his close ties with Ukrainian business circles and his extensive international experience.
